Wig & Hair Care Guide

A good wig can completely transform your look, and proper care is what keeps it looking its best.

Different wigs and hair products need different care, so always check the instructions supplied with your product first. Where those instructions differ from the general guidance below, follow the product-specific instructions.

Before wearing your wig

  • Remove the packaging carefully.
  • Inspect the wig for any visible issues.
  • Check the size and construction against the product page.
  • Read the product-specific care instructions.

Make sure you are happy with your wig before making any permanent alterations. Do not cut the lace until you are completely happy with your purchase. Once the lace has been cut or the wig has otherwise been altered, it is no longer eligible for a change-of-mind return. See our Returns & Refunds page.

Washing your wig

The correct washing method depends on the hair type, so check the product instructions first. Do not wash a wig unless the product is designed to be washed.

In general:

  • Detangle gently before washing.
  • Use products suitable for the specific hair type.
  • Avoid aggressive rubbing.
  • Rinse thoroughly.
  • Allow the hair to dry as directed.

Brushing and detangling

Always detangle gently. Start at the ends and work upwards rather than pulling from the roots. For longer hair, divide it into sections first. Avoid excessive force, particularly around the lace and attachment areas.

Heat styling

If your wig is heat-safe, use heat protection and stay within the temperature range recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid unnecessary heat exposure.

If you are unsure whether your wig can be straightened, curled or otherwise heat-styled, contact us or consult a professional before applying heat.

Colouring and chemical treatments

Never assume that a wig can safely be bleached, dyed or chemically treated. Different hair types react differently to colour and chemicals.

If you are considering colouring or chemically treating your wig, check the product specifications first and consider using a professional stylist.

Sleeping in your wig

Where possible, avoid sleeping in a wig unless the product and fitting method are designed for it. Friction can cause tangling, matting and unnecessary wear.

Storage

When you are not wearing your wig:

  • Keep it clean and dry.
  • Store it away from excessive heat.
  • Avoid prolonged direct sunlight.
  • Use a wig stand or other suitable storage where appropriate.
  • Keep it away from excessive moisture.
  • Protect longer hair from unnecessary tangling.

Looking after hair extensions

Hair extensions should be treated gently. Avoid excessive heat, harsh chemicals and unnecessary tension, and follow the care instructions for the extension type you have bought. Our Hair Extensions Guide covers this in more detail.
